When you force an exhalation against a closed glottis, in order to created an increase in intrathoracic pressure. Simply, you are not following the recommendation to inhale on eccencentric phase and exhale on the concentric phase, which is good information but not as practical always practical when performing heavy resistance training.

If you’ve every seen that guy at the gym who’s face is red gets red as a tomato or those videos on youtube of guys passing out after lifting a heavy set you’ve probably seen valsalava maneuver gone wrong.

Use caution and consult a professional if using the valsalva maneuver. Use additional caution if you have a history of high blood pressure. The valsalva maneuver can increase blood pressure significantly. It is often used with heavy weight lifting and primarly used during the “sticking point “ of the lift such as, the bottom of a squat.
