This Might Be In Your Tap Water...

What harmful substances can potentially be in your tap water?

It’s Worse Than You Thought…

The EPA describes contaminants in water as basically anything that is not a water molecule and further breaks down contaminents into four categories: physical, chemical, biological, and radiological. Whether or not a contaminant is dangerous will depend on the type of contaminant and the amount that is present in the water. Some contaminants can actually be present without being harmful to your health while other are harmful despite the amount.

Types of drinking water contaminants Categorized By the EPA

Physical

Contaminants that change the physical appearance or properties of water. Includes organic material and/or sediment suspended in bodies or water such as lakes or streams.

Chemical

Contaminants that are elements or compounds. Can be found naturally or man-made.

Biological

Contaminants that are microbes or microorganisms in water.

Radiological

Contaminants that are chemical elements with a unbalanced number of protons and neutrons that result in unstable atoms which can emit ionizing radiation.
