Acai Berry

Acai berry is a very popular supplement that is often promoted as a weight loss supplement and anti-aging solution. You can find acai berry in different products. Most commonly you will find acai berry sold as juice, in pill or capsule form but it is also advertised in many beauty products for it’s potential anti aging benefits.

The acai berry is a red/purple colored fruit that grows on a type of palm tree that is found in Central and South America. The benefits of acai are believed to come from it’s very high antioxidant contents. The acai berry is often promoted to have much higher antioxidant content as compared to other similar juices like blueberry, strawberry, and cranberry.

Currently there isn’t a significant amount of high quality research to show the weight- loss and anti-aging benefits of acai berry. Antioxidants are shown to be very potential health benefits but the major issue comes down to the concentration and/or quantity of the antioxidants needed to be beneficial. Many products that claim to include acai berry may be truthful but that quantity the juice or supplement actually includes may be minimal and the doses may fall very short of the amounts needed to provide a health benefit.

Andrographis

Andrographis paniculata, is a bitter herb that has been used for many years in India and Asia. It is most commonly advertised as a digestive aid. Andorgraphis should not be used by women that are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.

  • May shorten the duration of the common cold and upper respiratory infections

  • Can reduce the severity of cold and upper respiratory infection symptoms

  • Can help to prevent colds when taken regularly or before the onset of cold.

    • More research is needed but andrographis appears to be safe when taken for short durations but always consult a doctor prior to taking herbs.


Artichoke Extract

Artochoke extract is commonly sold as a solution to help with digestive issues or ease gastrointestinal problems. It is also included in supplement that claim to help lower cholesterol. As the term describes the benefit comes from not the artichoke fruit itself, which is healthy for most people to consume on it’s own but the supplement is extracted from the large leaves of the artichoke that aren’t usually consumed on their own.

  • When combined with a combination of forskolin and other supplements, artichoke extract can potentially improve cognitive function, memory, and learning abilities.

  • Potential weight loss benefits from the ability to reduce spikes in glucose after meals.

  • The antioxidant properties may benefit hair that has been damaged by sun uva rays.


Cat’s claw

Uncaria tomentosa, aka cat’s claw comes from vine that is found in Central and South America. It is commonly sold as a tea or found in pill or capsule form. It’s often found in supplement blends that are advertised as immune boosters or cold reducers. Caution should be used and always consult a doctor prior to consuming cat’s claw if taking drugs for hypertension because it may lower blood pressure.

Cayenne Pepper

The caynne pepper, aka Capssicum annuum is usually known for it use in the kitchen for it’s use a spice and is commonly found in supplements for it’s potential fat burning or weight loss benefits and sometime to relieve gastrointestinal issues. When bought in it’s whole form it a bright red pepper found in many areas in the North, Central, and South America. The active ingredient used in supplements is called capsaicin.
